How To: Deal With Sensitive Teeth

We have a lot of patients who come to us with sensitive teeth, which is no surprise when such a high amount of the population suffer from the problem – hence the endless TV adverts promoting special toothpastes to help.

Dealing with sensitive teeth can actually be really hard. You often have to avoid consuming certain things, and the pain you do get could be just a twinge, or it could be unbearably sharp. At Abbey Road Dental, we see patients suffering from sensitive teeth on a wide scale; with some finding it simply ‘irritating’, and others really struggling to cope with the everyday pain.

Acid Is The Enemy

Citrus foods and other highly acidic foods need to be avoided if possible because they can wear your enamel down making you more susceptible to sensitive teeth. If you don’t know which foods you need to be avoiding, please ask us about this at your next appointment and we can help you.

Sensitive Toothpaste Works

Toothpastes dealing with sensitive teeth can be really useful. We’re not saying they all work, or that they are all suitable for you, but some are really great and we are more than happy to recommend the brands we think you could benefit from. We would also recommend if you do start using a sensitive toothpaste that you use it regularly in replacement of your regular toothpaste. Some people opt to use it only before consuming certain things and this isn’t the best path to consistent relief.

Avoid Cold Things

This sounds really obvious, but if you get real pain when you consume certain things, like ice cream or cold water, you might need to make a few adjustments to avoid the pain. Long term, the right dental care and routine might help you avoid this completely, but if you know certain things will trigger the pain, it makes sense to make adjustments so you avoid them.

Consider Changing Your Toothbrush

You might need to change your toothbrush to a soft one. Although most people use a soft to medium bristle brush, those with sensitive teeth may benefit from changing theirs to a softer one which will be more gentle on that protective tooth enamel.

Is Your Oral Hygiene As Great As It Could Be?

It is so important your teeth are clean and healthy to avoid sensitivity. When plaque forms on the teeth it releases an acid that irritates the teeth. Following a good oral hygiene routine – brushing twice a day, using the right toothbrush and toothpaste and visiting your NW8 dental clinic regularly, will all contribute to you avoiding or managing sensitive teeth.
