Crowns And Bridges

Tooth restoration and replacement in St John’s Wood.

Here at Abbey Road Dental we are proud to offer the latest cosmetic dentistry and of course, all the expected general dentistry you might need at our friendly local dentists in NW8.

As part of our very broad range of treatments, we offer crowns and bridges to help restore and replace damaged and missing teeth.

Crowns are very important dental tools used to reinforce teeth that have sustained damage that cannot be repaired with a simple filling. Teeth where root canal treatment has been performed, also need strengthening by the application of a crown. Bridges are used to support a crown(s) which replace lost teeth – the “bridge” being used quite literally to bridge the space between healthy teeth adjacent to the gap.

How Does They Work?

For a crown, firstly we have to prepare the underlying tooth to receive it. Next, the artificial crown which has been carefully matched to your natural teeth and prepared at the dental laboratory, is fixed in place using a strong dental cement. The objective is to create a strong repair for your damaged tooth which looks and behaves much like your natural teeth.

With bridges, the process is different because we are quite literally bridging the gap where teeth have been lost. So two crowns are attached to neighbouring teeth, and the gap in the middle is filled with a bridge. During this process we may have to remove some healthy tooth material from the surrounding teeth in order to attach crowns to them.

Why Crowns And Bridges?

As well as helping to strengthen a tooth, crowns may improve the appearance of a tooth, or make the alignment or shape better. Bridges are a traditional, trusted way of replacing lost teeth.

What Materials Are Crowns & Bridges Made From?

Most commonly, crowns are made from ceramic or porcelain which match the colour of your natural teeth. However, other materials can be used including gold. Sometimes porcelain is bonded to metal to create a combination crown. Bridges are typically made from porcelain fused to metal, or ceramic.

How Long Do Crowns & Bridges Last?

They can last you for your entire life, but they might progressively become loose or even fail altogether. Practicing excellent oral hygiene will help prolong the life of your natural teeth and any restorations done on or near them. Regular visits to your dentist will also ensure that the surrounding area can be checked, as if the teeth, tissues or bone holding the crown or bridge in place are damaged because of dental issues, then problems can arise.
